F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby" is a story that tells about the character Jay Gatsby but through the eyes of Nick Carraway. The story is also a comparison of the rich and not so well to do families- West Egg and East Egg.

The first ever description of Jay Gatsby was in chapter 1 where Nick gave a somewhat vague description of what he thinks Gatsby may look like. Then in Chapter 3, the narrator was invited to a party at Gatsby's place. There, he and  Miss Baker met a drunken man among the books, in the library. This was the physical first appearance of Gatsby in person before Nick, the first time he have seen his neighbor in person.
