a harvard study shows that consumers who are better informed tend to save money as well as make healthier choices. that seems to be somewhat obvious: the more information we have about the products, the better we can choose according to our needs and beliefs. so, if we were to think from the perspective of the consumer only, it would only seem fair to have the manufacturers inform us on every single detail about their   products.

what we fail to understand, in that case, is that manufacturers do not wish to do so. otherwise, they wouldn't spend millions on propaganda every year. what they really want is to sell us an illusion. who would buy the most famous brand of cola drinks if they were to show us what it really does to our health? instead, they show us vibrant colors, smiling people gathered around a table full of delicious food, celebrating all year round. buy the drink, be happy as a consequence.

a business's goal, in general, is to survive. and, in order to do so, it must make money. the fact is: whether we like it or not, businesses are not willing to tell us the ugly truth. they see us as a market, as a mass that needs some convincing before giving them what we earn by relinquishing our time, our lives. and, when we do not possess any information on the products, we easily comply.

so, it is up to us to find that piece of information that will make all the difference in the way we spend our money. of course, we can force companies to offer us such information by demanding more strict laws. however, we should not expect them to do it openly, on ads, on tv. but we can find such knowledge online, on websites, blogs, and vlogs, for instance. we can read literature about that specific ingredient, manufacturing process, or maintenance needs. as a matter of fact, we are the most spoiled generation when it comes to having access to information. but, let's face, we do not take the time to find it.

in conclusion, when a company targets uninformed consumers, it's doing what it does best: sell a lie. however, even though manufacturers should offer information about their products, be it for legal or for ethical reasons, consumers only remain uninformed if they wish to do so. it's up to us to look it up, to read it, to demand it. the better we make ourselves informed, the better choices we can make.
