the runners had been circling the track for what seemed like hours. each competitor hoped that he would take home the state championship trophy for the 10,000 meter event (6.2 miles). during some laps, runners took turns passing each other with bursts of speed. in other laps, nothing changed, as runners seemed to be planning for their next move. with only a lap to go, one of the lead runners tripped and fell. the crowd gasped. it was clear his knee was pretty badly hurt. despite his injury, the runner managed to cross over the finish line as the crowd cheered him on.
