Glaciers are masses of ice that hold important information about earth's past. by
studying glaciers, scientists can see what temperatures used to be like and how the
amount of so-called "greenhouse gases" has changed. unfortunately, earth is getting
warmer, and glaciers have started melting. to prevent the loss of important data, in
2015, scientists collected ice samples from a glacier in the french alps. the team used
special drills to extract ice cores that were more than 130 meters long. because the cores
were so large, they needed to be brought up in segments. the scientists faced another
challenge-finding a place to store the cores where they would remain safely frozen.
some of the cores were taken to concordia research station in antarctica. the rest were
shipped to other research centers around the world.
