No the isolation isn't worth it for him, but he doesn't know it until he allows Lennie to come into his room.  Only then does Crooks calm down as he is conversing with Lennie.  No, to be totally isolated from everyone is never worth it.  You might even say it is a bit "selfish" to choose isolation over company.  Lennie, as did Crooks needed the sense of "commonalty" that the three (Candy too) shared allowing them to feel better about themselves. so isolation wouldn't have been "safer" for Lennie either.
