Reread paragraphs 11-16 of the story. How is dramatic
irony created in this scene in which crying sounds come
from the twins' bedroom?
10 Later, Alison, Josh and Jesse were sitting on the couch
watching game shows on TV. An outsider would think
these three were simply enjoying a pleasant evening
together. Alison, however, knew that there was
something eerie about the normalcy of the night thus
far. The boys sat on their hands, in anticipation,
sneaking each other pleased looks every so often.
Alison thinks that the cries coming
from behind the door are fake, but
the reader knows they aren't.
11 Suddenly, the sounds of a crying child could be heard
from behind the twins' closed bedroom door.
Alison believes that the twins have a
new sister, but the reader knows
they are lying.
12 "Okay... that's just creepy. What is that guys?" Alison
asked.
13 "Oh, Mom didn't tell you?" replied Jesse. "We've adopted
a little two-year-old girl. Josh and I finally have the sister
we've always wanted!"
Alison thinks that the cries coming
from the bedroom sound real, but
the reader knows they are fake.
Alison doesn't think that there's a
trap waiting behind the door, but
the reader knows there is.
