1. Syntax can be rearranged to create a different experience for the reader. Read the following passage while paying attention to the syntax.
"We’re on a flat, open stretch of ground. A plain of hard-packed dirt. Behind the tributes across from me, I can see nothing, indicating either a steep downward slope or even a cliff. To my right lies a lake. To my left and back, sparse piney woods."

2. Try to rewrite the passage using as many of the same words as in the original, but format it in a different way to change the syntax. Does your re-write change the feeling of the passage?

3. Writer’s block is something that generally afflicts all writers at one point or another in their career. Obviously, writer’s block is fairly specific within the writing domain; however, what other professions might suffer from a similar type of barrier? Briefly compare and contrast writer’s block to a similar obstacle that a person in another profession may encounter.

4. Imagine that you are a teacher for a creative writing course at the college-level. You begin a lesson by discussing the importance of accessing one’s own creativity and identifying ways to inspire oneself. What are some suggestions that you might offer your students (based on what was learned in the unit) as to how to find their creativity and inspiration? How would you help to inspire them?
