Nocturnal Animals

Animals that are mostly active during the night are called nocturnal. These animals tend to hunt, roam, and play like animals seen in the daytime, but they wait until the sky is dark to come out. During the daytime, most nocturnal animals sleep or rest in dark caves or burrows. Various types of animals including birds, reptiles, mammals, fish, amphibians, and insects can be nocturnal. Examples of some nocturnal animals include bats, owls, beetles, coyotes, and catfish.

Nocturnal Adaptations

For animals that are mostly active during daylight, dark nighttime environments would make their hunting and traveling quite difficult. Nocturnal animals have developed adaptations to survive their life in the dark. Some have extremely good eyesight and/or hearing to locate their prey. Others use echolocation to help them travel in the dark. This adaptation allows animals to determine their location and surrounding objects by listening to echoes of sounds they make.
