Question 1: Make sure you read the Author's Preface. It explains why Jean Craighead George wrote My Side of the Mountain. Then read "I Hole Up in a Snowstorm" and "I Get Started on This Venture." (pages ix-xii and 3-20)

Sam has entered the wilderness with a penknife, a ball of cord (string), an ax, $40, and a piece of flint and steel. What 5 items would you bring into the wilderness if you decided to run away as Sam did. Why would you bring each of those items in particular? You can only bring one item that Sam brought. The other 4 must be your own ideas. Think hard about the reasons why you're bringing those items. Telling me because they will help you is not strong enough, so be specific. What will the items help you do?
