October, Freshman year, my daddy drove 12 hours to surprise me early one morning for breakfast, then later wined and dined me and Paula, whom he’d known through Jack and Jill when she stayed at our house for the ‘64 regional conference. The timing was perfect as I was feeling “ungrounded” and “unintegrated” into the Fisk Culture. Dr. Ford taught me to say Fisk-k-k-k; Dr. Onwauche initiated my transition from Negro to Black; Rev. Dr. Welch put religion into perspective; and Dr. Collins taught me that teachers weren’t always fair, but that was no reason not to do my best. Dean Cowan, Mrs. Sims, Mrs. Lord, elegant women and standard-bearers of the ideal Fisk Lady; “Q” parties (and the Freshman round up), a drunken haze; Treks to White’s with Beverly N. for $0.59 fish and beer; the Freshman Talent Show (I sang Summertime); Summer school and sharing a room in JUBILEE HALL (!) with my upperclassman friend, Carolyn; Courting; Jubilee Singers rehearsals; Being on the Kappa Court; Junior year, DuBois Hall, my favorite time, with Nancy and Pam next door, and Flip and Barley across the hall. We kept our doors open and floated between the three rooms in ongoing conversations, laughter, playfulness, and loving supportiveness in times of anxiety and tears. So much fun, as I busted my ‘derriere’ to improve my GPA and pledge AKA the next fall (Fine Pi Line of ’69! ). What a journey! Then, it was off to graduate school at the University of Denver two weeks after graduation.
