Shirley Jackson's "the Lottery" is a story about a bizarre ritual that takes place every year in a small community. The winner of the lottery dies, and although the the villagers are aware of this terrible fortune that awaits the person who wins, they nevertheless participate in the lottery. They are afraid to end the lottery, simply because it has been taking place in their community for decades. They believe that something bad will happen if they put a stop to it - that they will somehow be cursed. They fail to realize what a tragic effect it has on families that lose their members, until they are found in that situation.

Mrs. Hutchinson does not complain until her husband is selected as a winner. She should have refused to participate in the lottery a long time ago, together with the rest of the community. Until the lottery directly influences their lives, the villagers consider it fair.

president kennedy presents communism as cowardly, as a hidden and treacherous weapon that strikes from the shadows like thieves, he represents the system as not even being capable of showing and open and overt attack or confrontation. to finish up the response, he expresses that the system attacks even a country's idependence and freedom.
