“I am really looking forward to the party next weekend,” Lori said. “It will be fun to have friends over to our house.”
“Me too,” said Horatio. “We just need to make sure we have the three most essential things for a party. Every party needs food, music, and something fun to do. As long as we have all of those, the party will be great.”
“Don’t worry,” Lori said. “I’ve got it all taken care of.”
“Great. I can’t wait to eat your famous cheeseburger pizza squares. They are delicious.”
“I’m not making those,” Lori said.
“Why not? You always serve them at parties.”
“I know. But I thought I would make something different this time. I am going to make liver surprise instead.”
“Liver surprise?” Horatio asked, raising one eyebrow. “What is that?”
“It’s a mixture of liver, onions, peanut butter, and broccoli.”
“That does not sound very good,” Horatio said. “Are you sure you want to make that?”
“Yes. It is going to be delicious. Trust me.”
“Well, I guess as long as we have all of the latest dance music to listen to, no one will really care what we are eating.”
“Oh, yes, I’ve been meaning to tell you,” Lori said. “We are not going to listen to dance music.”
“What?” Horatio cried. “How can we have a party without dance music? What are we going to listen to?”
“I invited our 11-year-old neighbor over. He is going to play the violin for us. He’s been practicing a lot lately. He is getting much better. Don’t you think everyone will enjoy a free concert instead of just listening to the same old music they can hear on the radio every day?”
“To be honest, I like the idea of dance music better, but I guess if you think it’s a good idea, we can give it a shot,” Horatio said. “Anyway, as long as we play a fun party game, I am sure that everyone will still have a good time. We can play charades or a trivia game.”
“Party games are so boring,” Lori said. “I’ve got a better idea. Instead of playing a game, we are going to look at my stamp collection.”
“Are you serious?” Horatio asked.
“Yes,” Lori said. “I just got a brand new stamp that I can’t wait for everyone to see.”
“I don’t know …” Horatio said. “Liver surprise? A violin concert? Your stamp collection? This doesn’t sound like any party I’ve been to.”
“Don’t worry. I know that it will be a great party.”
“What makes you so sure about that?”
“I am sure that it will be a great party because I am going to serve cheeseburger pizza squares, we are going to listen to dance music, and we are going to play fun party games, of course,” Lori said with a smile.
Horatio blinked his eyes. “But what about everything you just said?”
“I was just kidding. I can’t believe you fell for it!”
“Ha ha,” Horatio said. “I knew you were kidding the whole time.” Then he walked over to the refrigerator and threw something into the trash.
“What are you doing?” Lori asked.
“Throwing out all of our liver, onions, peanut butter, and broccoli—just in case you change your mind about the liver surprise.”

What is most likely the speaker’s reason to open with this? in approaching this problem, we cannot turn the clock back to 1868, when the [fourteenth] amendment was adopted, or even to 1896, when plessy v. ferguson was written. we must consider public education in the light of its full development and its present place in american life throughout the nation. only in this way can it be determined if segregation in public schools deprives these plaintiffs of the equal protection of the laws.
