Recently, in a large American city, a man was convicted of manslaughter because he ran a red light, hit
another car, and killed the driver. The judge sentenced him to five years' probation and ordered him to pay
during each of those years into a trust fund for the dead man's child. Since the convicted man has two small
children, the payments will be a strain. If he had been sent to prison, however, his family would suffer more
because he would have no salary. The victim's family would not have benefited, either.
