I am so bored that I watch paint dry while I grow grass in my yard by just watching it happen. I have seen a few things that were as silent as my street right now is and one of them is certainly the Sahara desert.

This uses similes ad metaphors as well as many tools of comparison to make the passage a little descriptive and to create a sort of a mental image.

The images here created can be termed imagery and are employed to convey their non literal meaning.
