Read the excerpt from "Object Lesson, Part 2."

"But this morning's little job," Ellery turned suddenly to the red-haired boy, "you pulled by yourself, Joey."

The thin boy quivered. "Who, me?"

"Yes, Joey, you."

"You got rocks in your skull," Joey whispered. "Not me!"

"I'll prove it, Joey. Hand me the dollar bill I found in your jeans when I searched you."

Why do these words create tension?

They create an uncomfortable situation for Joey.
The sudden movement surprises the reader.
They make the reader wonder what happened before.
They speed up the pacing of events.

In a 10-12 sentence response-style paragraph, explore the degree to which you agree or disagree with faulkner’s message. “i believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. he is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. the poet's, the writer's, duty is to write about these things. it is his privilege to man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. the poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to him endure and prevail” (faulkner 773-775).

In act v of a midsummer night's dream, quince presents the prologue for “pyramus and thisbe.” when he finishes, hippolyta comments: indeed he hath played on his prologue like a child on a recorder—a sound, but not in government. which tone does the simile “played on his prologue like a child on a recorder” create? it creates a sad, wistful tone by comparing quince’s performance to a beautiful tune. it creates a surprised tone by comparing quince’s performance to an eloquent speech by a government official. it creates a relaxed tone by comparing quince’s performance to lovely recorder music. it creates a humorous tone by comparing quince’s performance to a child playing an instrument badly.
