When the boys realized the fact that they are now out of civilization, They decided to set up a democratic society so as to maintain order among themselves while on the deserted island.

The boys elects Ralph as their leader who is portrayed as a good character. They also built shelters and showed love to the youngest in their midst. At the beginning of the story, the boys believed that they will soon be rescued, but when they realized that they will not be returning to civilization anytime soon, they no longer  followed the game of democratic society they set up. The become fearful, violent, savage and also superstitious.

Ralph believes in rules but lacks the ability to enforce the rule. this caused problem as Jack portrayed as violent and savage leads to destruction of the world. the story portrays Ralph and piggy as 'good' while Jack and his hunters as 'evil'.
