I do not find it difficult to empathize with characters who are selfish and/or empty because there is always more to those characters than the story lets on. Either that or they are like that because of something bad that happened to them in their past. For example, Nick Carraway is a rather empty person, he doesn't show much emotion or passion for things throughout the story. While he is an empty person, I appreciate him being the narrator of the story, because he doesn't let emotion get in the way of the story he is telling, so I trust that it isn't altered by his feelings about what happened.
