When Juana Inés was born in 1651, few could have imagined that she
would become one of the most influential writers, scholars, and
intellectuals of her generation. At the time, women in Mexico were
discouraged from writing about any topic besides religion. Still, Juana
defied her society's restrictions and became one of the most powerful
voices in Mexican and Spanish literature.
Even as a very young child, Juana showed a gift for language, a passion
for learning, and she was testing boundaries. At just three years old,
Juana already knew how to read and write in both Spanish and Latin.
