Ihave heard people say fishes. is this correct?

The word 'fish' is correct as both the singular AND the plural -- but ONLY IF you're describing two or more fish of the SAME species.

Use the word 'fishes' ONLY to refer or describe the plural of DIFFERENT species of fish (more than one species of fish).
