The Civil War played a crucial role in the formation of the modern United States. It compelled the nation to choose between freedom for all its
inhabitants' and the misguided practice of slavary. This freedom came at a steep price-about 625,000 soldiers and a large number of civilians
died during the war. The country can at least take comfort from the fact that these lives were lost upholding the virtues of liberty and freedom.
