Sometimes, the best ideas are the craziest ideas. In 1869, a man calling himself Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico had an idea. It was published by the Oakland Daily News. Norton I, whose real name was Joshua Norton, said that there should be a bridge built across the Golden Gate in San Francisco, California.
Even though no one believed Norton to be an emperor, they did give his idea some attention. In fact, his idea caught on. More and more citizens began calling for a bridge. In 1933, building for the Golden Gate Bridge was started.
Bridge-builder Joseph B. Strauss designed the bright orange bridge. It is a mile long. It also has cables that can hold 200 million pounds. Its construction was completed in 1937. During that time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the U. S. Now, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York Harbor holds that claim.
