Read the passage.

This is one citizen’s response to Senator Elizabeth Warren’s speech on equal pay.

I honestly can’t believe we’re still arguing over equal pay in the twenty-first century, either.

Isn’t the entire idea of squabbling about equal pay demeaning to women? As Warren states, more women today go to college than men. In college, women have the opportunity to study whatever discipline they choose, including fields that lead to high-paying jobs. Instead of complaining about income discrimination, women should focus on maximizing their ability to merit greater salaries.

Women aren’t the only ones who are underpaid. Last year my uncle did not receive a promotion for which he was certainly qualified. He believes that his social anxiety contributed to this missed opportunity; he often has difficulty mustering the courage to speak up in high-pressure situations, which causes him to be overlooked. People of both genders face hardships in the workplace. Some of those hardships are more subtle than others, but they still exist.

And not all women are underpaid! I can quickly rattle off a list of five women CEOs who, I’m absolutely confident, make more money than I do. To say that income inequality exists in this day and age is an insult to the women who have labored so tirelessly for their accomplishments.

Finally, if the salaries of women are raised, havoc will ensue. Companies cannot take on that extra burden, and many will fold. Or, companies will be forced to enact equality another way; instead of raising women’s salaries, they will decrease men’s. That’s not a “victory” that I want to champion.

Reread this excerpt from the speech.

Finally, if the salaries of women are raised, havoc will ensue. Companies cannot take on that extra burden, and many will fold. Or, companies will be forced to enact equality another way; instead of raising women’s salaries, they will decrease men’s. .

What makes the reasoning in this excerpt fallacious?

a The excerpt attacks women personally by implying that women would not mind an increase in their salary at men's expense.

b The excerpt evades the real issue by theorizing how equal pay would affect the economy.

c The excerpt is told from a male perspective, which calls into question its credibility.

d The excerpt uses oversimplification by implying change would be instantaneous and have one of two negative effects.
