The Bothersome Light

The neighbors in this country town loved the moonlight. Tammy, however, did not. Waxing moonlight blazed through her curtains and danced up her walls, keeping her awake. The light moved like a spotlight around the room. It even crept in through the crack under her door. A waning moon was no better because then everything was so quiet in the dark night that she felt she could hear rabbits breathing in the backyard. In fact, it was so quiet on nights of a new moon that she could hear the clouds scraping against each other like squealing brakes. Tammy could barely get any sleep on those nights too. There were days when she would go to school exhausted from a night of listening to moonlight.
Tammy loathed the moonlight. She didn't like the night in general actually because everything was always so dull. Even the stars in the country seemed boring. She read somewhere that all the stars were dead, and the light that most people see is from when the stars were alive. The light is just now reaching the Earth.
When she lived in the city, she saw no stars. The pollution blocked out most of the light and made it easy to sleep. Here in the country, it seemed like nothing slept, especially outside of her bedroom window.
On the nights when the moon waxed, like tonight, her room heated with light and warmed the wood frame of her window. Then Tammy was sure she heard the wood groaning from the heat.
Tonight, Tammy tiptoed to the widow, carefully avoiding the knots in the room's floorboards. Her callused, bare feet picked up every groove in the floor's wood grain like a record player needle picking up notes.
Tammy pulled back the curtain and looked out. What was beyond the window could never spark Tammy's imagination. Once again, it was just the bright moon sitting in the sky, alone like someone waiting for the bus to arrive.
