Read the paragraph. Every year, hikers get lost on hiking trails in wilderness areas throughout the United States. And, unfortunately, sometimes there are fatalities because the hikers cannot find their way out, are hurt, or suffer from exposure to the elements. Before going on a hike, have a plan. Know where you are going. Study a map of the area you want to hike in and take it with you. At many trailheads, you can find a map of the trails. Take a compass with you, and make sure you know how to use it. It is a good idea to never hike alone—even if you plan only a short day-hike in a familiar area. Always hike with someone else. And, most importantly, tell someone—your family, friends, or a trailhead host—where you are going and when they can expect you back! When you return, make sure you notify everyone that you are safe and sound. What is the author's purpose for writing this paragraph? to explain to readers what to do if they get lost while hiking to inform readers of the specific dangers of hiking alone to describe the equipment hikers should take with them on a hike to explain to readers how to ensure their own safety when hiking

Read this passage from “the fall of the house of usher.” which element of gothic literature is not obvious in this passage? as if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell, the huge antique panels to which the speaker pointed threw slowly back, upon the instant, their ponderous and ebony jaws. it was the work of the rushing gust—but then without those doors there did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady madeline of usher. there was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. for a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold—then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. bleak or remote settings supernatural or otherworldly elements macabre or violent incidents strong language full of dangerous meaning
