by Ruth Stiles Gannett
In this story, a boy tells a tale about his father. The father's
name is Elmer. When Elmer was a young boy himself, he
was on an adventure on Wild Island. He tried to find a
dragon. But everywhere he turned on the island, there
was something in his way
because Elmer is smart and he
tricks the lion
My father crept along and peered into a small clearing just
ahead. A lion was prancing about, dowing at his mane. It
was all snarled and full of blackberry twigs. The more he
dowed the worse it became and the madder he grew and
the more he yelled at himself,
because the lion is forgiving and
he lets Elmer go
because Elmer is careful and he
