The beast gave the father a gift letting him spend the night and eat his food and in return the father didn't say thank you he stole his possessions.

He picks one not knowing that roses are the beasts prized possession. The merchant ends up needing to give up one of his daughters. Just don't take things from others with asking or just don't in the first place, or you will end up punished.

The man took to rose for the youngest daughter. "However, one of his daughters, who was the youngest of all children, wanted simply a rose.''

Some evidence was  "And in that garden there were many." That's what led him to picking one if there was only one, he probably wouldn't have. He just wanted to bring something back for his daughter.
