5. Reread this passage fromThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and ask yourself what theme in the novel is supported by the passage. Benjamin, once he left the hospital, took life as he found it. Several small boys were brought to see him, and he spent a stiff-jointed afternoon trying to work up an interest in tops and marbles--he even managed, quite accidentally, to break a kitchen window with a stone from a sling shot, a feat which secretly delighted his father. Thereafter Benjamin contrived to break something every day, but he did these things only because they were expected of him, and because he was by nature obliging. Which of these statements expresses a theme that is supported by this passage? The physical changes caused by aging often lead to changes in a person's goals and expectations. A person's physical appearance affects the way he or she is understood--or misunderstood--by other people. What society expects a person to do has a stronger effect on behavior than personal preferences or desires. The feelings and behaviors associated with youth are mostly a result of inexperience.
