When reciting a monologue, you must understand the content and context of the speech. This involves understanding the character’s motivations and emotions so that you can clearly communicate the appropriate tone to your listener. For this project, you are expected to:
1. Memorize and recite one Shakespearean monologue

Step 1: Prepare for the project. a) Read through the guide before you begin so you know the expectations for this project. b) If there is anything that is not clear to you, be sure to ask your teacher. c) Choose one of the two monologues provided from The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.

Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the monologue. a) Read the monologue carefully to ensure you understand the content, purpose, and tone of the speaker. b) Locate a professional recitation of the monologue from a reputable source on the internet. As you listen, make notes that indicate heightened emotions and natural or dramatic pauses.

Step 3: Memorize the monologue. a) Break the monologue into logical chunks of lines. b) Practice memorizing one chunk of lines at a time. Record yourself or practice with a peer so you can identify mistakes that need to be corrected. When one chunk is memorized, move on to the next.

Step 4: Rehearse reciting the monologue. a) Once you have memorized the lines, rehearse your delivery by practicing in front of a mirror or recording yourself. b) Focus on adding emotion, speeding up and slowing down, and raising and lowering your volume for dramatic effect. Step 5: Evaluate your preparedness before delivering your monologue. If you can check each box below, you are ready to recite the monologue for your teacher. Are you able to recite the monologue without error? Do you understand the content and context of the speech? Have you listened to a professional recording? Step 6: Recite the monologue. a) If you were unable to check off all of the requirements on the checklist, take more time to prepare. b) If you are ready, make arrangements with your teacher to schedule your recitation.
