Instructions: Using the ideas you previously wrote in your Argument Organizer on the topic you chose on lesson 6.04, you will write the introduction paragraph of your argument.

Step 1: Review :
An argumentative essay always begins with an introduction. The introduction features three important components:
an overview that provides general information about the topic
an explanation that describes why the issue is controversial
a claim that clearly presents your stand on the issue
Overview: Write one to three sentences to ensure your readers understand the topic you will discuss.
Do: Provide readers with important information that sets the stage for your claim.
Strong example: Smoking is a habit that affects millions of people. As of 2012, 19 percent of Americans who are 18 years old and over smoke cigarettes regularly.
Don’t: Waste time by explaining the obvious.
Weak example: Smoking is a process where people burn tobacco that is wrapped in paper, then inhale and exhale the smoke.
Explanation: Use one to three sentences to show why your topic is controversial. Provide a glimpse of the two perspectives, but not a lot of details.
Do: Give a little information about both sides without taking one.
Strong example: It has been proven that smoking causes health problems, but it is unclear what the government should do about the situation. Many laws have been passed to protect non-smokers, but smokers feel that their civil rights are being taken away.
Don’t: Give away your perspective or share research you will use later.
Weak example: It has been proven that smoking causes health problems. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death. People who smoke show little regard for the health of friends, family, and innocent strangers.
Claim: Write a single sentence that presents the specific point of view you plan to argue in your essay.
Do: State your claim so readers know that your aim is to convince them to agree.
Strong example: Smoking presents a danger to all citizens and should be banned completely.
Don’t: Write in first person or present an opinion you cannot support with facts. Don't express your feelings or emotions.
Weak example: I think smoking is really disgusting and should be banned completely.

Step 2: Look at an example Introduction and the explanations after each section.
Example: Storm chasers are scientists, meteorologists, and thrill-seekers who go into storms to gather data and photographs. Some storm chasers do it for science. Others do it for money. (The overview is strong. It gives a clear and brief introduction so the reader understands the topic of storm chasers.) Many people wonder if they should be allowed to do it at all. In recent years, storm chasers have made important discoveries but have also caused problems for authorities. (The explanation is strong. It provides a glimpse of both sides of the issue. It clearly describes why the issue is controversial.) Storm chasing does more good than harm and should not be outlawed in disaster situations. (The claim is strong. It clearly and effectively takes a stand on the issue. It presents the perspective the author will support with research.)
