The Group of Seven or G7 is an intergovernmental forum of seven leading industrial states and the European Union. These are Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union.

The G6 started in 1975 as an informal gathering of the leaders of the major industrial states. The group included France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and West Germany. The G7 was created when Canada joined a year later. In 1977 the European Economic Community (the predecessor of the European Union) was also invited.

In 1997, Russia was also added to the list, creating the Group of Eight. However, the G8 did not replace the G7. Especially during the credit crisis, the G7 still met regularly at ministerial level. In 2014, following the annexation of Crimea by Russia, it was decided to no longer cooperate with Russia, de facto dissolving the G8.
