Read this excerpt from a literary analysis essay: Dickens's characterization of Pip in Great Expectations
shows the negative effects of pride and greed. Pip, after
living in the "big city" for some time, returns to his village to
visit his friend Biddy. At one point, she tells him that she
doubts he actually will return to visit them. Pip is upset:
"Don't say any more,
if
you please, Biddy. This shocks me
very much." Unfortunately, Pip cannot see the truth about
himself.
Is the underlined commentary in the excerpt effective?
