Jo an Aiken's "Sonata for Harp and Bicycle" is a short story about a haunted office space after the s u i ci de of a man who had previously worked as the ni ght wa tc h man of that building. The story revolves around the attempts of two people in trying to reunite the dead lovers' souls/ gho sts and break the c ur se that has been put over the Gri mes building.

Jason A sh grove had been intrigued about the need to rush out of the office building at exactly 5 pm. And after one night's stay to find out the truth, he had been 'cursed' which led his assistant, Miss Golden, to interfere and tell him about the cur se. The story about the sui cide of the ni ght wa tch man William Heron after his lover Miss Bell failed to turn up for their usual meeting led to the cu rse that whoever stays in the building after 5 pm is bound to jump off from the fire escape. And ever since, the cu rse had been there over the whole building.

After hearing of the story behind the curse, Jason and Miss Golden decided to reunite the two dead lovers and thus, put an end to the cur se. So, unitedly, they planned for a meet-up at 10 pm, bringing roses and wine just like Mr. Heron had done the night he died. Then, with the help of an R. A. F. friend, Jason had accessed a parachute with which he led Miss Golden safely out of the building through the fire escape after leading Heron to Miss Bell's room at 492.

And through their united effort, the two dead ghosts were united and also led to the end of the cur se at Gri mes building.
