The complexity of their communication is what divides humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. Yes, birds call to each other to make sure everyone in the flock is safe; yes, dolphins whistle to coordinate group hunts; yes, dogs and cats and chimpanzees and even honeybees send each other messages. But no animal does it quite like humans! We sing, we dance, we draw, we write, we talk—we communicate with almost every breath we take, every move we make. And we have been doing this since prehistoric times. Thousands of years ago, we were not quite as advanced as we are now, but we still communicated. Oftentimes, this communication is through art. Tip! Learn the differences between each of the types of figurative language and imagery so you can use each one effectively in your own writing. Art ranges from the early cave drawings of Spain and France to the cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso and Paul Cezanne. Art truly has a language all its own.
