The effect in which religion had on early American literature was tremendous. During that time, when Puritan settlers were just beginning to settle in their new homes, heavy topics of religion were incorporated into their American literature because they had wanted the freedom to practice their Puritan religion in their own way. These settlers, however, did eventually split up into further religious groups, which made religion a largely disputed topic, thus these religious settlers felt that it was necessary to incorporate their beliefs into their writings as well. Therefore, the effect that religion had on early American literature played a large role in making clear the beliefs and setting down religious boundaries of these different groups such as Puritans, Catholics, and Quakers.
