Task 1: The First Draft
"Failure" essays can be some of the best kinds to write, as they are both a way to process an
event and reflect on it, and a way to learn how to cultivate an honest tone in your writing.
Write a three-page personal essay (about 1000 to 1500 words) about a time when you failed
at something but learned a valuable lesson. Write this essay in half-hour time chunks, until
you have a finished "skeleton" of an essay. This skeleton should feel complete but in need of
"fleshing out," or expansion. You may need to spend between one and a half to two hours to
do this.
