The electoral college is the vote that determines who the president will be. It is a group of voters established by the Constitution that represent each state individually based on the population within each state. So bigger states will have more representatives going to vote than smaller states. The popular vote helps to determine who the most popular candidate is in each individual state, the votes within each state get tallied up and then the electoral college gets to go and hopefully vote for the candidate that was most popular, but they can generally choose whoever they want to. Because of this, people whose candidate didn't get chosen as most popular will be upset with their state and their electoral college for going with the opposition.
