This is for an English assignment I had and this is what I put. I don't understand it and need some help asap. 1. Highlight every prepositional phrase in each of these sentences. Then, indicate whether each phrase is an adjective phrase or an adverb phrase next to each bullet point. -Elena’s mother was unhappy in Paterson. (highlighted: in Paterson) -Adjective phrase -When Elena sat on the fire escape, she was above Eugene’s backyard. (highlighted: on the fire escape) -Adjective phrase -The boys tossed basketballs through a hoop in the yard. (highlighted: through a hoop in the yard) -Adverb phrase 2. Reread paragraph 29 of “American History.” Mark one adjective phrase and one adverb phrase. List them below, and note which word each phrase modifies. Paragraph 29: "I knocked softly. A few suspenseful moments later the door opened just a crack. The red, swollen face of a woman appeared. She had a halo of red hair floating over a delicate ivory face—the face of a doll—with freckles on the nose. Her smudged eye make- up made her look unreal to me, like a mannequin seen through a warped store window." My examples: (I am still missing one) - ¨The red, swollen face of a woman appeared.¨ (adjective phrase) Add either an adjective phrase or an adverb phrase to each sentence. Label each phrase you add. Example: We drove. We drove to the suburbs. (adverb phrase) We drove to the suburbs of Paterson and Clifton. - I could see the snow falling like a lace veil. (adjective phrase) Elena observed Eugene. - Elena observed Eugene in his books. (adjective phrase) Elena observed Eugene from her bedroom (adverb phrase? I am unsure about the this and the one above) I could see the snow falling like a lace veil -I could see the snow falling like a lace veil in the morning. (adverb phrase)
