In the text, "The Rights to the Streets of Memphis," Richard Wright, tells the story of a childhood journey and what he learned. But before we read the story, we are going to take notice of one of Richard Wright's greatest abilities...creating imagery. Read the first paragraph that starts with the word, "Hunger..." Paragraph 1 (Links to an external site.) What he does here is paint a picture using vivid images (hunger as a creature standing by his bed) and sensory language (what it looks like, sounds like, feels like, smells like, tastes like) but instead of using paint, he uses words. Now it is your turn. Choose another state of being (not hunger, something else) and using vivid imagery and sensory language write a paragraph showing that state of being using the "hunger" paragraph as an example. Hint: What are states of being? Some states of being: joyful, depressed, calm, anxiety, hunger, thirst, freezing, love, anger, hate...you get the idea... there are a million to choose from)
