The first communities on the Hawaiian islands were likely located along the coasts. There, the settlers could get food from inlets and natural ponds. These places offered fish, squid, and shellfish. The sea held different types of limu (seaweed). The land also offered natural materials that helped the developing community. Trees grew naturally on the islands. Fish hooks were made from olopua trees. Spears were made from the same type of tree. The wood was also made into posts for hale (houses). Canoes were made from koa trees. Other trees were turned into fish traps, bowls, and other tools.
