I agree that plays are meant to be watched; however, when you are seeing a play, you are seeing the director and actors' interpretation of the authors words, so it's a good idea to read a play before you see it.  

When you read a play, it's very important to read ALL of the stage directions and descriptions because it's sort of like the narration in a book. Without it you don't know where you are, what people are doing as they speak, what the area looks like, etc. If you skip stage directions, that's like only reading the dialog in a novel; the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Reading a short story, you have more ways to learn about the characters, plot, setting, etc than you do reading a play because of the narration.

6. How do plays create context?  [I don't have an answer for that.]

7. Many believe drama is the literary form.  [Not sure how to answer.]

8. For many centuries, drama focused on  themes. {True.}
