We had a week to wait. The morning we were due to
arrive in San Francisco, all the passengers came on deck
early, but I was the first. I skipped breakfast and went to
the very front of the ship where the railing comes to a
point. That morning I would be the "eyes" of the
President Taft, searching the horizon for the first speck of
land. My private ceremony of greeting, however, would
not come until we were closer, until we were sailing
through the Golden Gate. For years I had heard about the
Golden Gate, a narrow stretch of water connecting the
Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay. And for years I had
planned my entrance.
