Olaudah Equiano, also known as Gustavus Vassa (1745- 1797), was an 18th century Nigerian writer and merchant. In his story, Equiano provides details of his native village, Essaka, and the laws and customs of the Igbo people. He describes some of the African communities known when he was forcibly taken to the coast, his journey on a slave ship, the brutality of slavery in the colonies of the West Indies, Virginia and Georgia and the deprivation of civil rights suffered by African people who were liberated in those places.
