Charles and Hal buy Buck and his team of dogs after they've traveled thousands of miles delivering mail. The three plan to travel to Dawson with their dog sled. Charles, Hal, and Mercedes make quite the trio. They're foolish and mean to the dogs. Mercedes is especially unprepared for her new life.

Traveling in the Yukon

When Buck first meets Mercedes, she is getting in the way and giving lots of advice on packing that is not very helpful. When some people suggest they leave the tent behind, Mercedes throws up ''her hands in dainty dismay. However in the world could I manage without a tent?''

When they realize they have too much stuff, they decide to leave some things behind. Mercedes cries dramatically throughout the whole process and then goes through it all ''like a tornado.'' Their camp is a mess and the three people argue a lot.

3.the words "sans" means "without." it is a french word that is often used in english even today. so he is saying that in the last age of a man, the man is without eyes, taste, or anything else. he also says that this is the "last stage of all" and that it is the stage that ends a man's "history."
