What is the relationship among trade, banking, and joint-stock companies?

As trade and commerce grew, the need for banks arose. Banking increased the wealth of merchants. Thus, they began to create joint-stock companies, or businesses in which a group of people invest together. This allowed investors to take fewer risks since investors were able to share in the companies' profits and losses.
