WASHINGTON, D. C. (Achieve3000, February 13, 2017). During a National Football League (NFL) game in 1998, Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Reeves felt burning in his throat and chest. He'd had heart issues in the past, so he knew that it was serious. Reeves told a doctor about his pain but suggested they wait to do anything. There were only three games left in the season. Reeves felt that he couldn't take time off. The doctor didn't agree.

"He told me, 'That's about the dumbest idea I've ever heard,'" Reeves recalled. Within hours, Reeves was on the operating table for the bypass surgery that saved his life.

Reeves wasn't the first or the last NFL head coach to end up in the hospital. Players get injured because of the physical demands of football. But among coaches, various health problems are also common. Coaches Mike Ditka, Bill Parcells, Gary Kubiak, and eventually Reeves all left their jobs after enduring multiple health issues. In the summer of 2016, longtime NFL coach Dennis Green died of a heart attack. Reeves says that the prevalence of health issues among NFL head coaches is at least partly due to the difficulty of the job. It also leaves little time for relaxation.

"[Coaching creates] a lot of stress," Reeves said. "It's the time it takes to get the job done. And we're all human. If you are struggling, the first thing you do is say, 'I've got to work harder.' And so you work [more hours]."

Stress can take its toll on workers in any field. Workers can experience stress when they must work many hours each day, when they must meet unrealistic demands, or when they experience distressing events as part of their jobs. They may fear the consequences of slowing down. But when people don't address workplace stress, they can experience health problems. These could include anxiety, high blood pressure, getting sick more often, or heart disease.

The job of an NFL head coach is somewhat similar to that of a CEO: work around the clock; manage dozens, if not hundreds, of people; and struggle to find time to exercise, eat right, and spend time with family. But the coach's experience also comes with other challenges. A coach's success is measured in wins and losses of games that millions of people watch and discuss every week. There's also the fact that being fired based on wins and losses is always in the back of a coach's mind. Since the start of the 2000 season, the average time an NFL coach stays in a position has been 3.9 years. The fate of a coach is tied to the performance of the 50 or so athletes on the team. And most of the athletes are young and holding their first full-time jobs.

The pressures of coaching were clearly on Kubiak's mind when he retired as an NFL coach in January 2017. Kubiak suffered a mini-stroke in 2013. In 2016, he was taken to the hospital after what doctors call a "complex migraine condition." It caused him to experience fatigue and weakness. Announcing his retirement, Kubiak said job demands wouldn't have allowed him to follow his doctor's orders.

"I've taken a lot of pride that I could coach a football team, be there for the players, be there for the coaches…do a game plan, [and] call some plays on Sunday," Kubiak said. "I've always taken pride that I could do all those things. But this year, I haven't been able to do that," he added, referring to the year before his retirement.

But for all the consequences of coaching, those who have had the job—and those who want the job—still find it alluring. There are only 32 NFL head coaching jobs. They remain among the most high-profile and coveted positions in sports. The coaches make millions of dollars a year. Reeves, who last coached in 2003, says he misses it.

"I can play golf, [and] I can do all [kinds] of things outside of football and never come close to the excitement you feel standing on the sideline when they're playing the national anthem," Reeves said. "You feel your heart rate start climbing and that's a great thing. But your heart, it's got to be at 100 percent for this job."
