Rosie's family had come through New York's Ellis Island in 1907 with such high hopes. They knew, of course, that the streets weren't really

paved with gold, but they looked forward to new opportunities.

Opportunities did come, but along with them came hardships. Though

the city was exciting, it was also overwhelming. Work was hard to find,

and it sometimes seemed as if no one had time to help or even notice

the new arrivals. Still, Rosie got used to her new life, and even though

she missed her old friends, she made new ones who helped her

through many hard times.

Which statement best explains how the setting affects the plot of this story?
