The following article is based on fact. It contains many inferences that are probably true. Try to notice the inferences and the facts as you read this article about the Mayan Indians of Mexico. The Mayas, whose ancestors came from Asia thousands of years before, developed into an outstanding culture in Mexico around the first century A. D. Another period of cultural and scientific advancement occurred in the tenth century. The Mayas are composed of several related tribes living in various Mexican states. The best-known tribe lived in the Yucatan peninsula.

Mayan architecture included pyramids which were often constructed near temples and other buildings around an open plaza. The pyramids consisted of a series of steps, becoming successively smaller. Steep staircases were built into the sides of these pyramids, which were often used for religious ceremonies.

The Mayas were involved in struggles among themselves and with other tribes. Some earlier cities had been deserted, probably the result of a peasant uprising. These cities soon crumbled into ruin. Other struggles with the Spanish probably led to the ultimate fall of the Mayan Civilization. Traces of this ancient civilization yet remain in the tangled jungle undergrowth of Mexico. From these ruins have been unearthed hieroglyphic records of their learning, beliefs, and history.
