What is the purpose of the metaphor in lines 4–5?

Forks in the road, mentioned in the opening lines, symbolize the different paths we take in life. We can only see as far as we can into the future with what we can see in the present.  The future is not visible but the path can be embarked upon. That is the meaning of this metaphor.
