Even if you know it by heart, as I do, you can enjoy the way Homer builds up suspense until the moment when Odysseus can triumph over his enemies.Now that it's back-to-school season at the malls, it's time for me to make up the syllabus for my fall-semester course in classical mythology. Last year, when I asked my students if they would like me to add or drop anything from the reading list, they requested more of what we were reading already: why not read the whole of ''The Aeneid''? Why not read all of Ovid's ''Metamorphoses''? So this year again, by popular demand, we will be reading the same old texts, all by dead white males.I could have suggested that we read stories told by writers less well known than Virgil and Ovid and Homer to break down the familiar canon of ''elite'' ancient authors.
