1. I was surprised by the fact that a lot of people condemned the story whereas similar incidences occur in the world today which is not really talked about.

Miriam who was among those that wrote the letters says that she does 'not know how anyone could have approved of that story'.

2. I was surprised that people could come together to commit such acts. I realized however that similar things occur in the world today. So, I should equally condemn them.

3. Recently, the incident of police brutality in my country is a case of man's inhumanity to man. An unarmed citizen was shot at because of some suspicions by the law enforcement agents. He was not given a fair trial and he lost his life.

The article by Ruth Franklin is a description of the reactions people had in response to an article written in July 1948 by Shirley Jackson. She talked about an American community that had the practice of making lots and choosing the person they would stone to death.

The majority of the readers of this article reacted harshly to it because they believed that the text was too gruesome and should not have been published.
